NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was at the Toronto Maple Leafs' season opener against the Montreal Canadiens, and it led to some pretty surprising comments.

A common misconception amongst NHL fans is that Gary Bettman absolutely despises the Canadian teams and is always conspiring against them.
While it is easy for Canadian fans to believe this, it is important to remember that Bettman's success as a commissioner relies on the success of all 32 NHL teams.
This past week, it was revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs are the most valuable team in the NHL, at a valuation of over $4 billion. The Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers rounded out the top three.
Bettman was asked about this while in Toronto on Wednesday night, and it led to a pretty interesting answer that may surprise a lot of Maple Leafs fans out there.

Gary Bettman talks Toronto Maple Leafs valuation

Simply, Bettman is impressed with the valuation; however, he thinks the number should actually be much higher, which speaks to how he feels about the Leafs' history as a whole.
They're still undervalued, in my opinion.
It's good to have a commissioner who recognizes these things and hopes for the overall success of his franchises, and yes, that includes the Canadian ones as well.
The Maple Leafs and the Canadiens definitely put on a good show for the fans last night, and if you're a fan of the team, you can't help but be excited for this new era of Leafs hockey.
They started the season with a win, which is more than they can say about last season.
Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs can continue to dominate and eventually surpass a valuation of $5 million.
