Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is gearing up for a potential contract negotiation, and the Toronto Maple Leafs will be keeping tabs.
Connor McDavid's next contract is of great interest to fans around the NHL and for very good reason. Overall, he is the best player in the league, and some think he could leave Edmonton.
The team has not won a Stanley Cup under his tenure, and there is this fear that they will never be able to do so.
Having said that, Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been trying to hold out hope that McDavid might become a free agent in 2026 and sign on with his childhood team.
Is Connor McDavid staying with the Edmonton Oilers?
According to Frank Seravalli, however, no one should be holding out hope that McDavid actually does leave Edmonton.
In a new report, he revealed there likely won't be any hiccups in the negotiations between McDavid and the Oilers.
To my knowledge...do not believe the two sides have even gotten to the point...of trading numbers; it'll get wrapped up in relatively short order; not expecting any hiccups
Furthermore, he noted that the beginning of August seems to be the most likely time for a deal to get discussed.
I'd expect in the first few days of August the Connor McDavid negotiations to get underway
As for the term, some believe it will be between 4-5 years in length, as opposed to the maximum of seven years under the new CBA.
Whatever the case may be, Maple Leafs fans will be disappointed to see the team's 2026 contingency plan already in ruins.
