The 2026-27 NHL Season is going to be an interesting one as the NHL has decided to go in a new direction that is going to be an adjustment for fans and the players.
If you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, or just a hockey fan in general, then you already know that the current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season.
A new CBA is already in place and it will come into effect for the 2026-27 season, which has a lot of fans interested and intrigued in how it will play out.
For those who didn't already know this, the season will be expanding from 82 games to 82 games.
New update on the 2026-27 NHL Season
It is a bit surprising that the NHL went with this prior to the NBA, but given the NBA has the in-season tournament and the play-in, it makes sense for the NHL to expand.
Having said that, reporter John Shannon has just revealed some major news about how the schedule is about to change going forward.
Essentially, with the two extra games, the league wants to start the season earlier as opposed to ending it later. This means the first game of the season could be on October 1st.
I think the NHL season will start a week sooner at some point; I do think when they get to 84...we're gonna be talking about October 1st
Overall, this is a positive change that should prove to be immediately popular with all of the Maple Leafs fans out there.
If you are a hockey fan, in general, then this is probably going to be a positive development for you.
Hopefully, the NHL continues to make good decisions going forward, as the growth of the game is what is important right now.
