Toronto Maple Leafs Facing Multi-Million Dollar Decision Involving Newly-Acquired Defenseman

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Henry Thrun is very new to the team, and now, there are already conversations being had about his next contract extension.
A few weeks ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Ryan Reaves to the San Jose Sharks, and in return, they were able to get defenseman Henry Thrun.
At 24 years old, Thrun has a real opportunity to impress the Leafs and become part of their future, even if he spends most of this season with the Toronto Marlies.
Having said that, the defenseman is going into the final year of his deal, and if the Leafs want to keep him around, a contract extension will be in order.

According to the Leafs Nation, Thrun could be in for $1.75 million per season, should he cement himself as a top-six defenseman going forward.
Of course, the odds of this happening are prety slim. However, the Leafs have plenty of time to watch it all play out and make a decision.

With all of these players the risk is a lot lower for the Leafs to wait than ever before. With a projected $24,000,000 of cap space to work with heading into the 2026-27 season, Toronto can take their time on all of these players, decide who they truly want to bring back and still have enough to be significant players in free agency.
Bringing in Thrun was mostly just a cost effective way of ridding themselves of the dead weight that was Reaves.
Having said that, there is no expectation that Thrun is going to be someone that the Maple Leafs will keep around for the long haul
If they do, then this will be seen as a genius move by Brad Treliving, who would love a hidden gem young defenseman to find his stride in Toronto.
