As the NHL season moves into February, teams are looking ahead of the trade deadline.
The Toronto Maple Leafs face growing incertitude with players like Mitch Marner and John Tavares still unsigned.
The recent Mikko Rantanen trade has intensified questions about Marner's future with the Leafs since Rantanen's expected contract range aligns with Marner's potential demands.
What will be next contract of John Tavares and Mitch Marner?
On TSN's Overdrive, Darren Dreger gave a surprising take on the Leafs' situation and suggested that the team might do significant restructuring.
Dreger said contract talks will become increasingly pressing while Mith Marner won' t be a trade candidate by the deadline.
I think you know, there's time on the side of both here. Because Mitch [Marner] is never going to be a trade pawn on March 7th, he's just not, right.
And so I'm sure that the preference for Brad Treliving would be that Darren Ferris, who represents Marner, would give them a call and say, "hey, why don't we, you know, get together when you get back off the road and let's have a conversation.
"I'd be surprised if it was lower than $13M times eight, and that's Toronto's stomach, so he much more Marner is going to get on the open market, maybe a lot more if he wants to play outside of his hometown and in a market that isn't or with a team that isn't as close to making the Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Dreger said that Brad Treliving and Marner's agent have not engaged in serious contract discussions which is adding tension as the playoffs approach.
Dreger acknowledged Toronto's respect for Marner's contributions but stressed that playoff performance will heavily influence the Leafs' decision at the end.
If Mitch Marner demands $13.25M or more, the Leafs might still sign him because they are valuing his role.
However, if negotiations stall, Toronto could shift and change their core by focusing on acquiring new talents and potentially moving on from both Marner and Tavares.
