Don Cherry was on his podcast recently where he spoke about Mitch Marner and the forward's contract negotiation with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Mitch Marner and Brad Treliving are currently in the midst of negotiating a brand-new deal and they seem to be far apart right now.
The Maple Leafs forward could demand upwards of $14 million per season which is a lot, however, the team isn't all that interested in paying that kind of money.

Don Cherry on Mitch Marner

On Don Cherry's Grapevine podcast, the Mitch Marner situation was brought up, and it led to some pretty interesting comments.
"If Marner doesn't do anything in the playoffs this year, let's say they go to the second round, and he doesn't do very well, should the Leafs sign him for big, though?" Tim Cherry asked.

As Cherry explains, the price is high but at the end of the day, it is all going to come down to the salary cap.
"I would not." Cherry said. "I would be careful to sign him for a big deal if Marner goes for over $14 million. (As the cap goes up) the room might be there."

For the most part, it does seem pretty clear that Cherry doesn't love signing Marner at $14 million per year regardless.
While he did just set up the winning goal at the 4 Nations Face-Off, there is no denying that Mitch has yet to get it done in the postseason.
Only then will he actually get the respect from his peers. Until then, he will still have to operate from the standpoint of proving himself.
Hopefully, the Maple Leafs and Marner can find some type of solution before it is too late.
