Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Necas is set to become a UFA next summer, and the Toronto Maple Leafs may just have the leverage to swoop in and make a deal.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been looking for a center all summer long, although it was becoming quite clear that the market was not ripe for that.
After all, the Leafs are working with limited assets, and teams are not going to sell you a top-six forward for absolutely nothing.
For now, the roster is just fine how it is, but general manager Brad Treliving is always looking for some reinforcements. In fact, it seems like there is a forward on the Colorado Avalanche who would make a great target.

Toronto Maple Leafs would love Martin Necas

That forward is none other than Martin Necas. He had a solid campaign split between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Colorado Avalanche last season.
He can get you one point per game throughout the entirety of the season, and the Leafs would love to have that. As James Murphy of RG.org explains, the Leafs may even make an in-season rental move.
Per James Murphy of RG.org:
They need to lock up Cale Makar next offseason, and even with the cap going up, where are they finding the money to give Necas? So now the real question to me is, will the Avalanche keep him as their own playoff rental at the trade deadline, or will he go to another team as a rental and sign an extension with them?

I'll tell you one thing: when it comes to trading for him at least as a rental, I'd be watching the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers; if, as I expect, the Rangers will be back in the playoff hunt.

If the Avalanche feel like it will be impossible to retain Martin Necas, then they may just have no choice but to go out and make a deal.
For the Leafs, however, it does feel like a stretch given the team's limited assets. We would love to be proven wrong.
Only time will tell whether or not Treliving can work his magic and make something happen.
