Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan did not play in the season opener; however, head coach Craig Berube is hinting at a potential big role.
Easton Cowan is looking to have a big rookie season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, although vying for playing time is not going to be an easy task.
Overall, the Maple Leafs forward has to compete with some pretty good players who have a lot more NHL experience than he does.
Craig Berube has a ton of respect for Easton Cowan
The Toronto Maple Leafs play the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, and the hope amongst the fanbase is that Cowan gets to make his debut.
That said, Craig Berube was recently on "The Real Kyper & Bourne," where he offered up some interesting observations about the kid, noting that he could eat up top-six minutes.
I think watching Cowan from junior to now, he's got a motor on him. That's a ways away, but I do believe that he could get there.
As for tomorrow's game, Berube isn't committing to anything right now. Instead, he is letting things play out completely naturally.
Cowan, we didn't play him last night, but that doesn't mean he's not going to be in the next game. Maybe he won't be, maybe he will be... At the same time, I have to make sure that he's not out too long because he needs to play.
If Cowan does find himself in the lineup for the Saturday night, then the fans will be eager to see if he can get some production, whether that be on the third or fourth line.
We just want to see the kid develop, and that could take some time. So don't be surprised if he is back in the AHL sooner rather than later.
