Former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mark Kirton has passed away at the age of 67 following a tragic battle with ALS.
Sad news has hit the hockey world as the Toronto Maple Leafs just announced the passing of former player Mark Kirton.
Kirton played two season with the Maple Leafs in the late 70s and early 80s.
Unfortunately, he passed away due to a battle with ALS, one of the most brutal diseases.
We are saddened to learn of the passing of Mark Kirton following a battle with ALS.
Mark made his NHL debut with the blue and white and would go on to spend 8 seasons in the NHL. In 2018, he was diagnosed with ALS and in 2020 he founded ALS Action Canada with PALS (Patients with ALS), a patient-led initiative to find a cure. The Leafs Alumni Association were proud to name Mark a recent recipient of the Carl Brewer Memorial award in recognition of his work.
Our thoughts are with Mark's friends and family during this time.
Throughout his career, Kirton also played for the Detroit Red Wings and the Vancouver Canucks.
However, it was the Toronto Maple Leafs where he began his journey in the National Hockey League.
Kirton went on to spend the rest of his career in the AHL with teams in Fredericton and Newmarket.
Overall, this is incredibly sad, but not uncommon. ALS seems to be a disease that afflicts numerous former athletes.
Kirton was a beloved member of the hockey fraternity, and our condolences go out to everyone who is affected by his passing.
