Former Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Mitch Marner is public enemy number one some days, with many fans trying to pinpoint who is to blame for his exit.

When the Toronto Maple Leafs lost Mitch Marner a few weeks ago to the Las Vegas Golden Knights, some fans were looking for a scapegoat.
Some felt like Kyle Dubas was to blame, as he didn't trade Marner two years ago before the forward's no-trade clause kicked in.
Others blamed Marner himself for being greedy and not understanding just how much of a God he could have been had he won a Stanley Cup in Toronto.

Kyle Dubas willing to get rid of Mitch Marner

These days, the blame game doesn't stop for anyone, and Chris Johnston of TSN seems to have a theory on who is really at the center of the Marner departure.
In the analyst's mind, this is the fault of former Leafs President Brendan Shanahan, who was staunchly against trading Marner back in June of 2023.

Johnston reveals Kyle Dubas was thinking of doing it, and knew that the best time to act would be right before July 1st. However, Shanahan shot him down.
That summer, I think he would have certainly wanted to listen and see what was out there, and they had until July 1st of 2023 to move Marner without any trade protection being involved.

At the time, the Maple Leafs could have gotten a nice haul for Marner, but now is not the time to worry about that kind of stuff.
Instead, the Maple Leafs are simply going to have to move on and figure out how to get this team to where it needs to go.
They have a solid crop of players. That was never the issue. Having said that, losing 102 points worth of production is always a hard pill to swallow.
