Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner was embroiled in numerous trade rumors at the deadline, with Mikko Rantanen being at the center of most of them.
At the trade deadline, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving was doing everything he could to give his team a chance in the postseason.
However, the biggest hurdle was
Mitch Marner and his no-trade clause. Treliving asked Marner to waive it so that they could move him to Carolina for Rantanen. Unsurprisingly, the winger refused, and the Dallas Stars got Rantanen instead.
Mitch Marner rejects Toronto Maple Leafs trade proposals
While on Sportsnet 590, Frank Seravalli spoke about the Marner situation and how there were multiple potential trades involving the winger.
I don't think Carolina was the only possibility for Mitch Marner to go to. I think they were working on other options to get their hands on Mikko Rantanen, and in the end, there was not the willingness to make it happen.
Now, Marner has the ability to become a free agent and leave the Toronto Maple Leafs for absolutely nothing.
If the winger does, in fact, leave, and the Leafs cannot manage a sign-and-trade, then Marner will be public enemy number one in Toronto for years to come.
Mikko Rantanen has been a stud in the playoffs for the Dallas Stars, and the Leafs could have used that in the playoffs against the Florida Panthers.
Only time will tell whether or not the Maple Leafs organization can pick up the pieces and come away from this summer a better hockey team.
