Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies is set to become a restricted free agent this summer, and general manager Brad Treliving has some hard work ahead of him.
Matthew Knies had himself a wonderful sophomore season with the Toronto Maple Leafs as he managed 29 goals and 58 points.
Now, the forward has some business to attend to as he is officially a restricted free agent. There will be teams looking to give him an offer sheet, even if he's stated he won't sign one.
Knies now has to decide whether or not he wants a bridge deal or a long-term contract. Leafs fans would love long-term, but a bridge deal might be more attractive for a player of his age and talent.
Is Matthew Knies signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs?
Treliving made it crystal clear that the Leafs would love to bring Knies back into the fold. He was even up front and said that they would prefer if a deal were done as quickly as humanly possible.
We'd like to get it done as soon as possible.
He refuses to reveal whether or not the Leafs will offer those players new contracts. Instead, the team is taking a wait-and-see approach.
With all of that being said, there is a real sense that the entire DNA of the team is being shaken up.
However, as a young burgeoning star, Matthew Knies could be the guy to change this team's DNA for the next decade to come.
