Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is up for a new contract this offseason, and according to Elliotte Friedman, there is some good news brewing here.
John Tavares had an exceptional 2024-25 campaign at the age of 34, and it has led to numerous discussions about the contract he will get this summer.
Having said that, Tavares has made it clear that he wants to remain with the Leafs, and his team appears willing to play ball at the negotiating table.
Is John Tavares staying with the Toronto Maple Leafs?
On "32 Thoughts," Elliotte Friedman revealed that Tavares and the Maple Leafs are already talking with one another, and the demands are fairly clear.
John Tavares could 100% get more money on the open market - and there'd be no shortage of interest. However, a deal with the Maple Leafs is expected to get done.
«As long as neither side is unreasonable, you have to believe a deal gets done.»
Tavares can't ask for $8M a year, and the Leafs can't offer $1M - but there's a middle ground both sides can live with. It's just a matter of getting there.
Based on Friedman's report, it is clear that the Leafs and Tavares are on the same page. It seems like $5 million per season might just be a fair compromise here.
However, negotiations can always go sideways. With
Mitch Marner and
Matthew Knies also in the market for money, there is no telling what the Leafs organization will do to make the numbers work.
Having said that, Marner is likely to walk, which means there would be more money lying around for Tavares.
Overall, this is going to be a fascinating offseason, and fans are very eager to see how it all plays out.
