John Tavares is looking for a new contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, although with free agency coming up, things could get very interesting.
When it comes to free agency, there is no denying that John Tavares is a priority for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He has made it clear that he wants to return to the franchise, and after a 38-goal season, the Leafs would be smart to bring him back.
However, at 34 years old, he is expected to take a step back. Unfortunately for the Leafs, his uptick in production last season also means they will have to pay more for Tavares' services going forward.
Is John Tavares returning to the Toronto Maple Leafs?
According to David Pagnotta, who was speaking to JD Bunkis this week, there is a price that the Toronto Maple Leafs are comfortable paying.
That price would be anywhere between $5-6 million per season. As for the term, a three-year deal is probably ideal for both sides.
"You're probably looking around $5M. If you're getting Tavares in the $5M range, that is a win for the team."
This is going to be a difficult offseason for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are at risk of losing guys like Mitch Marner.
Overall, the Leafs are a great team as it is, but they still need some extra pieces so that they can get over the hump.
If you are a Maple Leafs fan, it is hard not to be anxious going into this offseason, especially with all of the uncertainty surrounding the team.
However, if general manager Brad Treliving can work his magic, then perhaps this team will surprise a few people.
