Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares was looking to take his mind off things following the team's playoff exit, but Team Canada broke his heart.
In the days that followed, Tavares made plans to join Team Canada at the IIHF World Championships.
Unfortunately, Team Canada lost to Denmark in the quarter-finals, and the Leafs forward was robbed of an opportunity to play for his country.
John Tavares loses out on Team Canada opportunity
According to Nick Kypreos, Tavares' plans to join Team Canada were pretty well set in stone. The assumption was that Canada would make it to the semi-finals, and Tavares would take his flight immediately after.
The way Kypreos describes it, the former Leafs captain may as well have been at the airport already.
From my understanding, John Tavares was ready to go; he was at the airport. I think they booked him a flight, but they booked it so after the Denmark game to make sure, and he was supposed to join. They lost, and he went back home.
This is the second time that Tavares has been burned by Team Canada over the last few months.
Of course, he was previously snubbed by Hockey Canada at the Four-Nations Face Off. Despite his experience, he was left off the team.
At 34 years old, Tavares won't have many more opportunities to play for his country, so this definitely stings.
With the Olympics coming up in 2026, one has to wonder if he will get another chance. Leafs Nation can only hope.
