At the trade deadline, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving tried to make numerous moves, and Rasmus Ristolainen was one of them.
General Manager Brad Treliving made two huge moves at the trade deadline this season. He acquired
Brandon Carlo from the Boston Bruins and
Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers.
However, Treliving was looking to do a lot more with the Flyers. According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, he was attempting to trade for Rasmus Ristolainen.
Ristolainen is a star defenseman who was highly sought after during the trade deadline, and the
Toronto Maple Leafs had their sights set on him.

As Garrioch explained, the Leafs were willing to offer the Flyers the moon and back. However, the Flyers continuously refused.
"It should be noted that the Toronto Maple Leafs tried desperately to get Ristolainen at the trade deadline in March, and were rebuffed.
'The Leafs offered the moon and couldn't get him out there', a league source said."
As it stands, the Leafs don't have very many assets left to trade. Their early-round draft picks are mostly gone. Not to mention, their forward prospects are simply too valuable to give up right now.
This offseason is going to be a challenging one for the Leafs. It is hard to imagine them improving as opposed to regressing.
Whether or not this is a good thing, still remains to be seen.
