Former Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan interviewed with the New York Islanders this week but was passed over for Mathieu Darche.
Just a couple of days ago, Brendan Shanahan was let go by the
Toronto Maple Leafs after an MLSE board meeting.
However, he was passed over for Mathieu Darche, who had been working in the front office for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Brendan Shanahan's NHL future
According to Pierre LeBrun, the Islanders decided to go with Darche over Shanahan because they felt as though he was a better fit.
However, Shanahan remains well-respected around the NHL, and it is believed that he will have a new job soon enough.
Just to close the loop on the Islanders and Brendan Shanahan, they did talk this week. But there isn't a fit at this point. Believe it was a good conversation but there won't be a hire there.
Mathieu Darche has both GM and EVP of Hockey titles. That second title is noteworthy. It's basically president of hockey level.
Shanahan is well respected among owners, he will re-surface somewhere at some point for sure.
There aren't too many executive jobs around right now, however, these jobs can sometimes be created out of thin air.
The NHL is notorious for giving legends "make-work" opportunities and Brendan Shanahan could very well be the beneficiary of that.
Only time will tell whether or not the Maple Leafs are truly better off without Shanahan in their organization.
