NHL Insider Reveals the Truth Behind the Toronto Maple Leafs Trading Morgan Rielly

Morgan Rielly did not have his finest season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2024-25 and it has led to a whole lot of speculation about his place with the team.

Overall, Rielly had 41 points in 82 games. Last season, the defenseman had 58 points in 72 games. The drop off is pretty obvious.

Meanwhile, in the postseason, the defenseman made some pretty bad mistakes that had some fans wondering whether or not he was even playable.

Over the last few days, some analysts and insiders have posited that the Leafs could look to trade Rielly in the offseason.

Furthermore, the availability of Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram has only exacerbated those thoughts and feelings.

However, on "The Chris Johnston Show" today, the NHL insider revealed that the chances of a Rielly trade are very slim at this point. The Leafs need some offense on their blueline, and that is exactly what Rielly provides.

While Johnston didn't rule out the possibility entirely, he did note that it would be a huge shock for the Leafs to pull it off.

After all, Morgan Rielly is making $7.5 million, and with his term going all the way until 2030, there are numerous teams who wouldn't dare touch a contract like that.

At the end of the day, Rielly is a hard guy to move, and nothing is going to change that. If you have your heart set on Byram, perhaps it would be best to tread lightly.

As for this offseason, there is no doubt in our minds that the front office will have its hands full.
