Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is expected to test free agency, although there is a sense that the Leafs will try to get some clarity this week.
Mitch Marner is very likely on his way out of Toronto, however, there is still some hope that the superstar forward could have a change of heart.
Overall, the Maple Leafs are a team that have a lot of issues to deal with this summer, and their 102-point winger continues to be their biggest problem.
However, as Elliotte Friedman reported on "32 Thoughts," there is a good chance that the forward sits down with the front office this week.
Toronto Maple Leafs message to Mitch Marner
Friedman notes that the Leafs need clarity on what Marner's plans actually are because, at this stage, the forward has not been up front about his intentions.
In the eyes of the Sportsnet insider, the Leafs are likely to ask Marner point-blank whether or not he will test free agency.
"I think, first of all, the Maple Leafs are going to ask for clarity," Friedman said. "Just where is this going? Is it 100% you are testing free agency on July 1st? Or is there any conversation that can be had here? And that's what I think they'll do, is they'll ask that first and see what the answer is, and go from there."
Depending on the superstar's answer, the Leafs can move accordingly. While it would certainly hurt to be told free agency is an inevitability, it at least allows the Leafs to put themselves in the correct headspace.
The last thing this team needs is to be completely blindsided when the middle of the summer rolls around.
While some fans feel as though Marner's absence would be a good thing for this franchise, there is no doubt that losing 102 points of offense would be a tough pill to swallow.
No matter what happens, the Leafs are in for a truly difficult offseason filled with real uncertainty.
