Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies is a restricted free agent, and according to Elliotte Friedman, there is a major development shaping up between both sides.

Matthew Knies is very easily one of the best young players on the Toronto Maple Leafs, and there is no denying that he is worthy of a long-term contract.
This summer, Knies becomes a restricted free agent, which is going to be a very difficult reality for the Maple Leafs to swallow.
They must fend off offer sheets, and the best way to do this is by giving Knies what he wants. Given his 29 goals and 58 points in his sophomore season, he certainly deserves a significant raise.

Will the Toronto Maple Leafs sign Matthew Knies?

During an episode of 32 Thoughts, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Leafs and Knies are very motivated to get a deal done.
Some have theorized that Matthew Knies would bet on himself and attempt to negotiate a bridge deal. This would allow him to make even more money, sooner. However, the Leafs would prefer a long-term deal worth anywhere between $7-8 million per season.
According to Friedman, there is some interest from Knies to sign a long-term contract. This would be music to the ears of Leafs general manager Brad Treliving.
When Matthew Knies says, first and foremost, he wants to be a Maple Leaf, I think he's telling the truth, and I think the Maple Leafs believe that. So, their goal here will be to get this done before an offer sheet even becomes a reality. I think both sides want to get it done. But, again, it's grind time. It doesn't mean nobody's going to grind here. Both sides are going to grind, but, again, I start off with the opinion that there is a will on both sides to extend Knies long-term.
However, players have been known to say one thing and then do another when presented with life-changing money.
Hopefully, the Leafs and Knies come to an agreement soon and circumvent the offer sheet process altogether.
