Matthew Knies had a fantastic season with the Toronto Maple Leafs as he scored 29 goals and had a total of 58 points.
In the postseason, the forward continued to show that he can perform in the biggest moments. It was great to see, and we're sure the front office was impressed.
Having said that, Knies becomes a restricted free agent this summer, and the Maple Leafs organization is desperately trying to avoid an offer sheet situation.
Matthew Knies and Free Agency
On The Chris Johnston Show, NHL insider Chris Johnston made a huge revelation about the Leafs' plans for Knies.
Essentially, the Leafs are only comfortable paying Knies less than $8 million per year. At this stage, it feels as though $8 million is their absolute limit.
Additionally, it is currently unknown whether or not the Toronto Maple Leafs and Knies would agree to a long-term deal or a bridge deal.
Typically, young stars prefer bridge deals because they can bet on themselves to make more money sooner. However, there is also a lot of uncertainty in the NHL, so a long-term deal is also attractive.
Whatever the case may be, fans want to see Knies back with the team next season. If he were lost via an offer sheet, general manager Brad Treliving would become public enemy number one.
Having said that, it is clear that Knies and the Leafs have a mutual interest in staying together for a very long time.
