Toronto Maple Leafs Ownership Explains Why Brendan Shanahan Had to be Fired

Brendan Shanahan will no longer be the president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and based on MLSE's strategy, it makes sense why he had to go.
The decision came down from MLSE CEO Keith Pelley, who had made it crystal clear that changes were coming if the results weren't good enough.
A 6-1 loss in Game 7 to the Florida Panthers proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back, and now here we are.
Brendan Shanahan fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs
According to Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic, the reasoning for Brendan Shanahan's firing is very simple.
When Pelley took over, MLSE's goal was for the Leafs to at least make the Eastern Conference Finals. Pelley wants to win, not sell jerseys. Well, with ownership feeling embarrassed after Sunday's loss, a decision was made.
The way the series ended against Florida left the Maple Leafs' ownership disappointed and embarrassed, and has opened the window for change. Per reports, ownership set the internal bar at an Eastern Conference Final appearance and was let down - especially after two lopsided home losses that saw jerseys and beers thrown on the ice. This is seen as a pivotal summer for GM Brad Treliving, who now reports directly to Keith Pelley.
While there's no rush to act, Pelley's recent statement emphasized the need for a «new voice» as the Leafs aim to revamp their roster and stay in the Cup mix.
From here on out, it is unlikely that the Leafs will hire a new President. Instead, it is expected that general manager Brad Treliving will report to Keith Pelley.
The roster may also see some sweeping changes this offseason, which should not come as a surprise to anyone at this stage.
