With the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson gearing up for arbitration, both sides have decided to make a deal that will prove to be controversial for the fans.
For weeks now,
Nick Robertson's arbitration case has been a huge point of contention among Toronto Maple Leafs fans. Overall, we have seen numerous trade rumors, and yesterday, we got to see what the salary expectations are.
According to Elliotte Friedman, Robertson will be making $1.85 million next season, which is a pretty big cap hit considering the Leafs only wanted to pay $1.2 million.
This is a huge deal for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who only have so much cap space to give right now. Of course, Robertson's signing takes a huge chunk out of the team's allotment.
Whatever the case may be, this signing is going to be a controversial one, especially when you consider how the Leafs had to overpay.
Having said that, arbitration has never worked out for the Maple Leafs, and it makes sense that they would want to avoid a worst-case scenario.
What is next for Nick Robertson and the Toronto Maple Leafs
Moving forward, it is likely that the Maple Leafs are going to try and trade Robertson. Of course, that might be tough to do at this cap hit.
Robertson is a player who had 15 goals last season, but he didn't get much playing time in the postseason, which is going to be important for the Leafs.
Overall, the bottom-six is already set in stone, and there just isn't a ton of space for Robertson right now. Having said that, the Leafs have to make a tough decision.
Whether or not the forward is on the opening night roster, remains to be seen.
