Last night, the Ottawa Senators took on the Tampa Bay Lightning in a game that had huge implications for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Atlantic Division.
The
Toronto Maple Leafs have been preoccupied with the Atlantic Division title race, where they are battling teams like the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With a game in hand, the Lightning had an opportunity to cut the Leafs' lead down to just one point. However, things did not go according to plan as the Senators defeated the Lightning in regulation.
Toronto Maple Leafs hold onto the Atlantic Division lead
The final score was 2-1 and it was an incredible performance from
Linus Ullmark who was able to steal the game away from Tampa Bay.
Now, with seven games left in the season, the Leafs maintain their three-point lead and with games next week against Florida and Tampa Bay, Toronto needs to keep winning.
The Lightning lost to Ottawa in regulation, meaning no points were picked up on the Leafs.
Updated Atlantic Division standings:
🔹 Maple Leafs: 96 PTS
▫️ Lightning: 93 PTS
▫️ Panthers: 92 PTS
▫️ Senators: 86 PTS
Overall, fans should be very excited about the position the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in.
No one would have thought winning the division was possible at the start of the season, especially under a new head coach and a new system.
That said, Craig Berube has been fantastic and it remains clear that the Leafs are one of the teams that could make a huge push come playoff time.
If the Leafs do win a couple of rounds, then fans are going to remember that for years to come.
