Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand is about to become an unrestricted free agent, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to make a huge play on the superstar.
Brad Marchand has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs ever since the trade deadline, and there is no denying that the team wants him in free agency.
Of course, the Florida Panthers would love to re-sign him, but that might not be possible. The team doesn't have a ton of cap space, and with Marchand looking for a huge contract, he may just go somewhere else.
This is where the Leafs can come in. With Mitch Marner leaving, the Leafs have a ton of cap space to play with, and Marchy would be the perfect fit.
Brad Marchand and the Toronto Maple Leafs
According to TSN insider Pierre LeBrun, there is, in fact, a scenario in which the Leafs can get Marchand. It all stems from the fact that Marchand was given an offer by the Panthers, and he has yet to agree to it.
While LeBrun believes Marchand will eventually sign, he does think the Maple Leafs are gearing up to pounce, and that they will be the first team to put in an offer.
LeBrun on Insider Trading says Panthers made an offer to Brad Marchand, they had a big presentation for him, now it's up to him and his camp. Might be hard for him to leave, LeBrun feels it's more likely he signs, but if he does leave, Leafs would love to make him an offer.
If the Maple Leafs get Marchand, then some will see this as a successful offseason for general manager Brad Treliving.
The Leafs have re-signed John Tavares, and they are on the verge of re-signing Matthew Knies. Meanwhile, if they get this Mitch Marner sign-and-trade done, then this will be some nice handy work.
Overall, this is going to be a fascinating scenario to watch play out, and if you are a Leafs fan, you can't help but be impressed by everything that is going down.
Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs get a lot done this week, or if they are doomed to have a painfully ordinary offseason.
