Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is being taken to task by Dom Luszczyszyn for a shaky offseason that isn't being well-received right now.
Dom Luszczyszyn is not impressed with Brad Treliving
As a result, Dom Luszczyszyn of
The Athletic recently ranked the Maple Leafs 31st out of 32 teams in his offseason ranking.
This is a very low placement, and Luszczyszyn justifies it by noting that the Maple Leafs just haven't been able to replace
Mitch Marner in an optimal way.
"There is a gigantic Mitch Marner-sized hole in the Leafs' forward group that remains unfilled. The Leafs badly needed a true top-six forward to fill that void, but didn't have a lot of options to do so. What they did to get Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy was savvy and has bolstered the team's forward depth, but it obviously doesn't come anywhere close to equaling the value Marner brings," wrote Luszczyszyn. "Toronto is now arguably closer to the Ottawa and Montreal tier of the Atlantic than it is to the Florida and Tampa Bay tier."
Overall, he is correct about this. The reporter understands that the Maple Leafs have essentially become a worse team.
It seems extremely unlikely that they would be able to repeat as Atlantic Division champions and seriously compete with the Florida Panthers.
That said, the Leafs may surprise some people, and perhaps this ranking will eventually age poorly.
Regardless, this season is going to be an uphill battle, and a lot of fans are going to be in for an interesting ride.
