Going into this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to have some struggles, and if they want to win the Stanley Cup, it is going to be an uphill battle.

After losing Mitch Marner in free agency, it became clear to fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs that this season would be a difficult one.
However, after winning the Atlantic Division, and pushing the Stanley Cup champions to seven games, there has been this feeling that the Leafs could still go deep this season.
Unfortunately, the pundits disagree, and they are making their opinions known just seven weeks prior to the start of the NHL season.

Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup hopes

Sara Civian of Bleacher Reportrecently made a piece about the top 10 Stanley Cup contenders in the National Hockey League.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were ranked ninth; however, Civian made it clear that it is likelier than not that the Leafs take a step back.
We'll see how they're doing at the trade deadline, and it should be a big year for Matthew Knies, but this year could be a step back before a step forward type scenario.

Damien Cox seems to agree with this, as he said something similar about the Leafs this past week.
I look at the moves they've made and what they appear to be trying to do, and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I still think they're going to have a good hockey team. They will be in that 100-point range again next year.

I just don't see how they're going to be better.

It seems pretty likely that the Toronto Maple Leafs will make the playoffs, but won't really make much of an impact beyond the first round.
However, without Marner, perhaps the team has more heart to make a deep run. Unfortunately, the Florida Panthers will make things very difficult.
