Toronto Maple Leafs forward Scott Laughton could be in for a new contract next summer, and the salary figures are going to be hefty despite a poor 2024-25 campaign.
For someone who was traded for with a first-round pick, he is not living up to the expectations. Furthermore, at $3 million per season, he is being paid too much.
However, his contract is set to expire soon, and the Maple Leafs will have to grapple with this next summer.
Toronto Maple Leafs and Scott Laughton need to talk
In a new piece from The Leafs Nation, Laughton's projected contract was revealed. Ultimately, the forward could make $4 million.
Of course, he would have to have a bounce-back season. Without that, it would make absolutely no sense for the Leafs to pay him so much money.
If not, then it was argued that Laughton could be brought back, but on a
David Kampf deal worth about $2.5 million.
You could make a case for Brad Treliving showing up with a carbon copy of the deal he made with David Kampf a few years back and saying this is what we'll do for a fourth line centre in this city but you could also make a case for how few players test free agency and Laughton will land on his feet even if the initial projected contract seems ridiculously high.
At the end of the day, the Maple Leafs will have a lot of decisions to make next summer, and most are going to be centered around offense.
Without
Mitch Marner, the Leafs need to find some production, and despite being on the fourth line, Laughton will need to perform.
If he doesn't, then he could find himself without a job for next season, which is less than idea.
