The Toronto Maple Leafs recently put one of their prospects on unconditional waivers with the goal of terminating their contract, and we have an update on that.
Voit had bounced around between the AHL and the ECHL, but wasn't showing enough potential for the Toronto Maple Leafs to really want to keep him around for the long haul.
Having said that, the Leafs had to first put him on unconditional waivers, where rival teams would be able to pick him up.
Ty Voit terminated by the Toronto Maple Leafs
On Wednesday, it was officially revealed that Voit had cleared waivers, which means the Leafs can officially terminate his deal, and that is what they plan to do.
Reports suggest this was a mutual agreement. Voit was part of the old guard from the Kyle Dubas administration, and the Leafs have changed their priorities when it comes to prospects.
General manager Brad Treliving is doing things differently, and Voit didn't fit what the Leafs were looking for.
Having said that, this is not the end of the road for Voit and his NHL aspirations, at least we don't think it is.
There are teams out there who would be interested in bringing him to their camp, and there is still plenty of time for him to sign a new deal.
Ultimately, the Maple Leafs are in a different situation compared to other teams. As a result, Voit just wasn't for them.
Now, they will look ahead to training camp, where young guys like
Easton Cowan will attempt to make the team for the first time.
