Toronto Maple Leafs Place Prospect on Unconditional Waivers as a Means to Terminate Contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to improve their roster, and they are also looking to tighten up their prospect pool after Kyle Dubas' questionable tenure.
Back in 2021, Kyle Dubas selected Sarnia Sting forward
Ty Voit with the fifth-round, 153rd overall pick in the NHL Draft.
Following this pick, Voit continued to play with the Sting for a couple of years before transitioning over to the ECHL. In 2023-24, he played one game with the Toronto Marlies and the rest with the Newfoundland Growlers.
Last season, he played for the Cincinnati Cyclones, where he was able to amass eight goals and 37 points in 63 games, which is respectable, but not enough to get back to the Marlies.
Toronto Maple Leafs getting rid of Ty Voit
A couple of weeks ago, Voit found himself at Maple Leafs development camp, where the pressure was on to showcase himself as a player the Leafs want to keep around.
Unfortunately, he was unable to do that. Today, it was revealed by Elliotte Friedman that Voit has been placed on unconditional waivers, and the Leafs are doing this to terminate his contract.

Overall, this is probably for the best. If Voit wasn't going to get an opportunity with the Leafs, this will at least give him a chance to go elsewhere.
His career is by no means over, and there is no doubt that another NHL team could be interested. Of course, he could always try his luck overseas.
At 22 years old, he still has plenty of avenues to try his luck and develop his game so that teams really do want him.
We wish Ty Voit the best of luck going forward. We hope he gets what he wants out of his hockey career.
