Matt Benning was acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the infamous Timothy Liljegren trade with the San Jose Sharks.

At the time of the trade, it was pretty clear that the team was mostly interested in the draft capital the move would bring. They got a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick.
As for Benning, fans knew he would either be a sixth-D or seventh-D at best. Consequently, a trade or waivers were the most likely options for him.
With Jani Hakanpaa coming back to the roster from his conditioning stint, the team had to make some room. In the end, Benning drew the shortest straw.
Today, it was reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet that Benning would be placed on waivers. If he clears, he will have to report to the Toronto Marlies.

Matt Benning on waivers

For Benning, this was always a real possibility and he knew it. While he would probably prefer to get opportunities with the Leafs, this will at least let him know where he stands with the team.
Moving forward, the Leafs do have a lot to think about. Especially in regards to trading assets. Benning is one such asset to could yield a decent return.
As for the team's performance, things have been going exceptionally well as of late.
For instance, the Maple Leafs are currently on a three-game winning streak and currently hold a solid record of 9-5-2.
Only time will tell whether or no the Leafs can extend the streak to four games.
As for Benning, we wish him the best going forward.
