If there is one thing the Toronto Maple Leafs need right now, it is a puck-moving defenseman, and there is one on the market right now who could use a PTO.
Overall, the Leafs had no other puck-moving defenseman on the roster, which created some problems for the offense as a whole.
According to Edward Eng of Editor in Leaf, this has put the Leafs in a position where they must go out and acquire a puck-moving defenseman.
Finally, the Maple Leafs for the most past struggled with production from their blue liners last season other than
Morgan Rielly. As a result, it often made it easy for the opposition in terms of coverage in the defensive zone as they could focus on neutralizing the Toronto forwards without any serious threat from the point. Therefore, adding a potential puck-moving defenseman to enhance the Leafs' offensive potential from the back end could do wonders for the club going forward.
As it turns out, the reporter's suggestion is to go after Matt Grzelcyk, who actually had a really nice season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Matt Grzelcyk would be perfect for the Toronto Maple Leafs
Despite scoring one goal and 39 assists for a career-high 40 points, the 31-year-old has found himself without a team for next season.
This has surprised a lot of folks out there, but it does open up the opportunity for the Maple Leafs to go out and sign the defenseman to a PTO.
While the Leafs do have a plethora of defenseman right now, Grzelcyk could very well replace someone like
Simon Benoit, who has limited offensive upside.
General manager Brad Treliving will have some big decisions to make going forward, and we look forward to what he decides.
