With the offseason coming to an end, the Toronto Maple Leafs are adding to their front office, and this includes a new European Scout who can find hidden gem talent.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a team that is in desperate need of European talent. This is especially true when it comes to the country of Finland, as they don't have any prospects there right now.
Having said that, a good way of fixing this issue is by hiring a European scout who has close ties to Finland and can get access to the country's best players.
As it turns out, the Maple Leafs did just that on Monday, as they hired Mikael Kotkaniemi to be the team's next European scout.
What is interesting about this hire, besides the man himself, is the fact that Mikael is the father of Carolina Hurricanes forward
Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi's dad joins the Toronto Maple Leafs
Kotkaniemi announced the hiring himself on his LinkedIn, which is why we know this happened in the first place. The Leafs never made an official announcement.
I'm excited to share that as of August 1, 2025, I have joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a European Scout, with responsibility for the entire continent.
It's a real privilege to become part of such a storied organization-one that inspires so much passion and emotion among fans around the world. I'm looking forward to contributing to the Leafs' future success.
The Maple Leafs have made a few hires this offseason, including Kyle Clifford, who will be part of the player development department.
Having said that, we do wish Kotkaniemi the best of luck in his new role, and we look forward to seeing what kind of players he discovers.
It is going to be interesting to see what kind of draft picks the Leafs make in 2026.
