Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies has the juice to be a phenomenal player in the NHL but with contract negotiations coming up, the franchise could trip up.
Matthew Knies is a sensational player who is on the verge of scoring 30 goals in a season. He has 29 this season and 55 points while playing on the top line.
This is only his second season with the Maple Leafs and fans feel as though he is one of the most important pieces on this team, especially going into the playoffs.
Matthew Knies turns Toronto Maple Leafs into a core Five
Essentially, Fox is letting the Maple Leafs know that they must tread carefully going forward here. They can't let Knies get the upper hand and go to his first year as a UFA without some sort of long-term deal.
"If Marner walks, the odds of going long-term with Knies go up. If Marner stays, Treliving is telling assistant GM Brandon Pridham to bust out the calculator and figure out how many years of Knies to buy. We'd want to go deep if possible...What the Leafs should not do is walk this kid straight to UFA, which is what they did with Matthews."
This is what ended up happening with
Auston Matthews and as many remember, it turned out to be a complete and utter disaster for the franchise.
With the Marner situation ongoing, Brad Treliving cannot afford to make mistakes when it comes to managing money and most importantly, managing assets.
For now, the team is more focused on going on a playoff run, but you never know what may happen from here on out. No matter what, things will get interesting.
Leafs fans just want Knies to stay with the team long-term as he continues to show the world just how valuable he is.
