Despite being in a rebuild, the Montreal Canadiens have consistently been a thorn in the side for the Maple Leafs over the years.
One can just look at the 2021 playoffs to understand how the Leafs have had trouble with this team, even when they are the heavy favorites.
Having said that, the Canadiens are looking to make a run to the playoffs this season, despite the odds.
They occupy that last Wild Card spot in the East and they just made things easier for themselves.
Subsequently, the Canadiens are set to sign
Ivan Demidov which means he will be allowed to play for them if they make the postseason.
SKA and Ivan Demidov have taken a joint decision which will see the forward join the Montreal Canadiens this season. His KHL rights will remain with SKA. He will return to Saint Petersburg if he doesn't gain a foothold in the NHL.
This is absolutely sensational news for the Canadiens organization and it should leave a lot of teams scared right now.
The Habs would face off against
the Washington Capitals in the first round which would be very tough, but not impossible given the way the Canadiens are playing right now.
As for the Maple Leafs, they would avoid the Canadiens until the Eastern Conference Finals as they would end up on different sides of the bracket despite being in the same division.
Regardless, this is a huge development for the Canadiens and the league is now on notice.
