New York Islanders Had the Perfect Response to Alex Ovechkin's Record, But Fans Didn't Like It

Today was a historic day in the National Hockey League as Alexander Ovechkin became the greatest goal-scorer in the history of the game.

He officially passed Wayne Gretzky with his 895th career goal and it came against the New York Islanders, who ultimately won the game by a score of 4-1.

All eyes were on this Islanders match even though it was mostly a boring affair aside from the Ovi goal.

Following Ovi's goal, there was a huge celebration on the ice and there was even a ceremony to commemorate the moment before the game got going again.

However, on social media, the New York Islanders made waves by simply stating that the score was now 2-1, all while avoiding who had scored.

It was cheeky and hilarious and quite frankly, not to be taken seriously by anyone who was following along. They were just having a bit of a laugh.

However, some fans on social media decided to get defensive and made fun of the Islanders for being a boring team that is only relevant because of Ovi.

It was a bit much and it was a demonstration of how some people completely missed the joke that the Islanders were trying to make.

Sometimes, this brand of deadpan humor just doesn't work with the massed over on X, and this was one of the times. We encourage the New York Islanders to keep doing this, however.

Only time will tell whether or not Alexander Ovechkin will reach 900 goals by the end of the season. However, we imagine he is going to at least try.
