Auston Matthews Almost Faced a Life-Threatening Injury From the Skate of Cutter Gauthier

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is very lucky right now as the skate of Anaheim Ducks star Cutter Gauthier barely missed him on Sunday night.
Auston Matthews has been playing well for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season even if he hasn't been giving the team the production they might otherwise be used to.
It has been a struggle at times for the forward as he reportedly has an injury that has been nagging him all season long, which is obviously not very fun.
However, Matthews has persevered and with the playoffs on the horizon, fans are very excited to see what he is going to do with the pressure mounting.
Auston Matthews close call with Cutter Gauthier
Last night, Matthews had himself a horrific close call with Anaheim Ducks star Cutter Gauthier who was falling to the ice during what looked like a routine play.
In the clip below, you can see Gauthier's skate get extremely close to the neck of Auston Matthews, yet somehow, the captain is able to avoid it and simply shake it off.
It could have been catastrophic as we saw something similar happen to Adam Johnson while playing in the EIHL. Thankfully, it wasn't the worst case scenario.
With this taking place on Sunday night, it has become clear that the NHL needs to expand the conversation around neck protection and making it mandatory for all players.
While some NHLers may say that it makes them uncomfortable and restricts them, the league needs to simply take action and save the players from themselves.
The worst thing that can happen is for a tragedy to occur and then feeling like some preventative measure could have been enacted sooner. That doesn't help anyone.
Having said that, we are just happy that Auston Matthews is okay and we look forward to seeing him on the ice Wednesday against the Florida Panthers.
