Rogers has been the primary TV broadcaster for the NHL in Canada for over a decade and now and that is not going to be changing anytime soon.
Over a decade ago now, Rogers came through and obliterated Bell by snatching the NHL's Canadian TV rights away from them.
For years, TSN had been the primary channel to watch NHL hockey throughout the course of an NHL season. However, Sportsnet eventually took over which turned out be controversial.
By now, fans are use to the change and see it as business as usual. Having said that, many were curious to see what would happen as Rogers' deal expires. Would they renegotiate or would they simply allow Bell to walk back in and steal the rights back?
NHL and Rogers to remain in business together
We now officially have our answer thanks to a report from Eben Novy-Williams, a journalist who works for
Sportico.
It has been revealed that the NHL has re-upped on its Canadian TV rights deal with Rogers and it is going to be a 12-year partnership worth a whopping $11 billion.
This is going to come as a disappointment to some of the fans out there who have complained that Rogers has gotten stale and that the TSN Crew has always been better.
The emergence of Monday Night Hockey on Amazon Prime has certainly proven to be a pressure cooker for Sportsnet, with many fans preferring the Amazon coverage.
Now, NHL fans in Canada have no choice but to live with this for the next 12 years, which might be a hard pill to swallow. For Rogers, they will gladly take it as they rake in the advertising dollars.
Meanwhile, the NHL also benefits here as they continue to be the number one show in Canada as far as sports are concerned. Hockey is king in Canada and that will continue to be true for years to come.
Another person who must be loving this is none other than Gary Bettman, who continues to be among the most heralded commissioners in sports.
