Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. received a $500 million deal today and Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews had something to say about it.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. became the talk of the MLB world on Monday after it was announced that the Toronto Blue Jays were signing him to a massive deal worth $500 million over 14 years.
Overall, this is a lot of money especially when you consider how Vlad hasn't been at his best over the last few seasons. Regardless, the Jays want to keep him and that's what they did.
Toronto sports fans are rejoicing over the contract as it means one of the most popular players will be staying put for a long time. In fact, Vlad's popularity is almost on par with that of
Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Auston Matthews talks Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
After Leafs practice today, Matthews was actually asked about Vlad's contract and what he thought about all of it.
This led to a great answer from the Maple Leafs captain, who noted that he has actually become acquaintances with the Blue Jays slugger.
«I've been fortunate to get to know him a little bit over the years. He's an incredible player - still a really young player - and a franchise kind of guy. It's pretty cool to have a guy like him wrapped up for the next several years.»
While Matthews will never make this kind of money due to the differences in baseball and hockey, there is no denying that he is just as special of a player.
If Matthews won a Stanley Cup on this city, he would instantly become the most beloved and most popular athlete in the entire history of the city.
That said, Toronto is very lucky to have both of these players representing their city and showcasing their talents.
One has to wonder if either will deliver a title or if they will retire without championship rings. It is too early to say.
