Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has a lot to think about right now, including the future of his team and superstar winger Mitch Marner.

Mitch Marner is likely going to explore free agency as of July 1st, and that means his time with the Maple Leafs is probably coming to an end.
While the superstar forward hasn't ruled out a return to the Leafs, fans have been reading between the lines. The expectation seems to be that he will leave as soon as he has the chance.
Having said that, general manager Brad Treliving must come through with a strategy for when Marner does walk away from the team. After all, replacing 102 points of production isn't easy.

Are the Toronto Maple Leafs keeping Mitch Marner?

During Friday's press conference, Brad Treliving was very honest about just how difficult it will be to replace a player like Marner.
However, he also acknowledges that his staff has a plan for whatever happens, and they are currently processing what to do next.
«There's not a hockey tree out there that you can just go and pluck the player off of,» Treliving said. «So our job is to make the team look at all of the options. That's what we got to go through right now. I can't sit here and give you a definitive answer. We've got a number one: go through the process with Mitch. Our staff is in the process now of looking at all different outcomes. But we've got to drive what we think is the best outcome.»
This is going to be one of the most important offseasons that this franchise has ever been through, and that is not an exaggeration.
Losing Mitch Marner could make this team struggle in some significant ways. However, if they sign the right free agents, then they might be able to salvage something.
Brad Marchand, Patrick Kane, and even Jamie Benn are considered viable options for the Maple Leafs right now.
Ultimately, it feels like a bit of a regression is inevitable next season. We simply cannot imagine a world in which the Leafs are better.
