Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has a huge decision to make regarding his next contract, and it seems like he is one step closer to choosing free agency.

Connor McDavid is easily the best player in the NHL, and going into the Summer of 2026, there are all sorts of rumors surrounding his future in Edmonton.
Over the last few weeks, there have been various reports that McDavid is going to wait until Team Canada's Olympic Orientation is over before engaging in contract talks.
Simply put, the expectation has been that McDavid would have his contract wrapped up by the time training camp rolls around.

Will Connor McDavid leave the Edmonton Oilers?

Unfortunately, for the Edmonton Oilers, this does not appear to actually be the case, at least not according to TSN reporter Ryan Rishaug.
He revealed that McDavid and his agents are evaluating what they should ask from the Oilers. Furthermore, they seem to be exploring other options. That said, there is a chance that McDavid becomes a free agent next Summer.
On the McDavid contract, there hasn't been a back and forth with dollars and term to this point between the two sides. After taking some time to regroup after the season McDavid and agent Judd Moldaver of Wassermann are working through what the options are and what the ask will look like.

No firm timeline on this, and expect dialogue to continue.
If McDavid does become a free agent, then every single team in the NHL will be gunning to have him on their team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will certainly be one of those franchises. The Leafs have been looking for a replacement for Mitch Marner, and McDavid has been on their radar.
However, teams looking at McDavid should know that it will probably cost them a pretty penny, with $16 million per season being the bare minimum.
Whatever the case may be, these next few weeks are going to be fascinating, albeit anxiety-inducing for Oilers fans.
