Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers are set to engage in contract negotiations soon, and the Toronto Maple Leafs will be paying attention.

Over the last couple of seasons, the Edmonton Oilers and their captain, Connor McDavid, have fallen just short of winning a Stanley Cup championship.
The Oilers need a starting goalie who can actually win this team some games. However, they also have to sign McDavid to a new deal, which is going to be costly.
There are all sorts of reports that McDavid is going to command a massive salary of $16 to $17.5 million per season, which is pretty significant.
McDavid will become a free agent in 2026, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to be paying attention to the situation. Unfortunately, it seems like McDavid is ready to negotiate with the Oilers.

Connor McDavid negotiations with the Edmonton Oilers

According to Elliotte Friedman, McDavid will be in Calgary for a meeting with Team Canada next week.
Once that is over, he will very likely go to Edmonton to negotiate a new deal. Based on what we know so far, a deal should get done fairly quickly.
Team Canada meets next week in Calgary, I expect after Connor McDavid is done there and he goes back up to Edmonton, they will work on getting this [extension] done
Overall, the Toronto Maple Leafs should probably forget about signing Connor McDavid. He's not going anywhere.
While McDavid may not sign for eight seasons, there is a good chance he signs for three to four years. This allows him flexibility to leave if things go wrong.
Whatever the case may be, McDavid is about to become the highest-paid player in NHL history.
