Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies is deserving of a massive contract extension, and the team needs to get it done before free agency on July 1st.

Matthew Knies is easily one of the best young players in the league right now, as he had 29 goals in his sophomore season. He has room to grow, and fans are confident he will be great.
However, the Toronto Maple Leafs are in a bit of a bind when it comes to the forward, as he is set to become a restricted free agent as of July 1st.
This means teams can hit Knies with an offer sheet. While he has made it clear he isn't interested in an offer sheet, you never know who may lure him away.

Matthew Knies contract negotiations

His contract negotiations have been more taxing than anticipated, especially with the forward wanting a bridge deal as opposed to something more long-term.
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, progress is finally being made when it comes to Knies. The Leafs are looking to get clarity prior to July 1st, and while it is more complex than John Tavares' deal, progress is happening.
The Maple Leafs have been «grinding away» behind the scenes, working to make progress on new contracts for both John Tavares and Matthew Knies.

Negotiations have picked up in recent days, and there's a sense things are moving in the right direction. With Tavares set to become a UFA on July 1st, there's a clear push to get something done - both sides want it, and he's made it known he wants to finish his career in Toronto. There's a sense progress was made today.

Knies' situation is a bit different as an RFA, but Brad Treliving views both players as priorities and is aiming to have clarity before July 1st hits and free agency opens.
This is very good news for Leafs fans, who have been feeling quite a bit of anxiety about Knies. As for John Tavares, it is good to see that an extension is close for him as well.
Overall, the Maple Leafs need as much help as they can get next season, especially with Mitch Marner on his way out. Having said that, we're glad to see some new signings are on the horizon.
Next Tuesday is July 1st, and things are definitely going to get very interesting. Hopefully, Brad Treliving can work his magic.
If not, there are going to be a whole lot of disappointed and disaffected Maple Leafs fans out there.
