Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was on '32 Thoughts' where he revealed what almost happened with Mitch Marner as he ultimately avoided free agency this year.
Had the forward gone to free agency, there would have been a ton of teams waiting to pounce on the opportunity to have one of the best players in the entire world.
Carolina Hurricanes wanted Mitch Marner
During a new episode of
'32 Thoughts,' Elliotte Freidman revealed that one of the teams interested in Marner was the Carolina Hurricanes.
In fact, had Marner made it to July 1st, the expectation was that the Hurricanes would have been the highest bidders. This means we could have seen upwards of $13-$14 million per season.
If Marner got to free agency, "a lot of people believed the biggest number was going to come out of Raleigh"
There were other teams involved, like the Los Angeles Kings, who were infamously forced to cancel their flights to Toronto after the Vegas deal got done.
At the end of the day, Marner was highly sought after, and it is easy to see why. He had 102 points last season and was easily one of the best right-wingers in the entire NHL.
Now, he gets a fresh start with the Las Vegas Golden Knights, who should be among the frontrunners to win the Stanley Cup next season.
Only time will tell whether or not Marner finds playoff success with the Knights, or if we just see more of the same.
