Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews infamously called his teammates "passengers," and we have evidence to suggest he meant Mitch Marner.
This was a harsh comment and one that Matthews rightfully took a lot of flak for. At the end of the day, the captain wasn't any better in that final game.
Auston Matthews took shots at Mitch Marner
According to a new report from the
'Cam & Strick Podcast,' Marner had been thinking about going to the Las Vegas Golden Knights for over a year.
Furthermore, by the 4 Nations Face-Off, he had made up his mind. Clearly, it was Marner who was the passenger the entire time.
Strickland said that a player told him that Marner had been talking about going to Vegas for like a year.
He also mentioned that Marner talked about Vegas at 4-Nations.
I guess Matthews' passenger comment makes a ton of sense now.
This is one of those things that Toronto Maple Leafs fans will not soon forget. A lot of them feel betrayed, and it is easy to see why.
However, the Maple Leafs now need to move on and enter a new era. The same can be said of Auston Matthews, who must now learn to play without Marner by his side.
It is not going to be easy, but it should be interesting all the same. Quite simply, we cannot wait to see how it all plays out.
As for Marner, only time will tell whether or not his foray in Las Vegas actually works out, or is a colossal flop.
