The Toronto Maple Leafs had been shopping Ryan Reaves for a while, and today, he was officially traded to the San Jose Sharks in a late-night swap.
In a stunning move that happened at 10 PM at night, the Toronto Maple Leafs have sent
Ryan Reaves packing to the San Jose Sharks.
The Leafs will be getting 24-year-old defenseman
Henry Thrun as compensation. He is a former fourth-round pick of the Anaheim Ducks, and he is even a Harvard alumnus.
Thrun had two goals and 10 assists for 12 points in 60 games this past season. However, he was a minus-23, which isn't exactly the kind of defensive rating you want to have.
Having said that, the Sharks were in the midst of a rebuild, so it is expected for your young d-men to have these kinds of numbers right out of the gate.
The kid has a ton of potential, and one has to wonder whether or not the Maple Leafs are going to be playing him next season, or if he will go down to the Toronto Marlies.
One could make the argument that the Leafs simply traded for him because he is a superior asset to Reaves, and could be flipped for a forward.
What's next for Ryan Reaves?
At 38 years old, he is running out of time. That said, the Sharks are a team lacking enforcers, so one has to assume he will get plenty of time on the fourth line this upcoming season.
The timing of the trade makes sense, as numerous reports indicated how the Leafs were hoping to get Reaves off the roster.
