The next NHL CBA is likely to be the last one negotiated by commissioner Gary Bettman, and Elliotte Friedman has the scoop on the chances of a lockout.
Overall, Gary Bettman's tenure as commissioner of the NHL has been plagued by a plethora of lockouts. These lockouts have sometimes lasted an entire season, while others have lasted half a season.
Ultimately, this has annoyed a lot of NHL fans, who feel as though Bettman has taken great hockey away from them.
Soon,
Bettman is expected to retire, but before then, he is looking to help negotiate at least one more CBA with NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh.
Is the NHL on the verge of a lockout?
I don't have an announcement to make today that we have a deal, but we have more than a year to go and I think we're in really good shape, having really good discussions. That's a testament to Marty Walsh and Ron Hainsey and people at the Players' Association who have been working tirelessly with us.
Now, with more CBA talks on the horizon, Elliotte Friedman has offered a massive update on the NHL and NHL's negotiations. If you have been worried about a lockout, this will soothe your mind.
The new CBA between NHL and NHLPA should be done "very soon" barring something unexpected
The current CBA runs out in September of 2026, which means the NHL has over a year to figure this out.
However, it would appear as though the league and the NHLPA are going to figure this out long before the deadline rolls around.
This is great news for the average fan, who is certainly afraid of the implications of yet another lockout on Gary Bettman's watch.
Only time will tell whether or not the league can get to the finish line, or fumble the bag for 15 months in a disastrous turn of events.
