Ex-NHL Assistant General Manager Steve Werier just revealed why the Toronto Maple Leafs will get a sign-and-trade done with Mitch Marner and the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs would receive center
Nicolas Roy, and they may even receive defenseman
Nicolas Hague. However, there is no telling whether or not the deal will get done.
Mitch Marner sign-and-trade to the Las Vegas Golden Knights
Former Florida Panthers assistant general manager Steve Werier took to Twitter today, where he revealed three reasons why the Golden Knights will get this trade done.
Having managed a NHL cap through free agency, and traded for pending UFA negotiating rights before July 1st, there's 3 reasons why a Marner/Vegas sign & trade makes sense today.even if it's for fewer than 8 years:
Legacy, Leverage & Benchmarking
In his mind, it comes down to Marner wanting to be liked in Toronto, while also being able to give the Golden Knights time to acquire other players.
Legacy:
Mitch and his agent can say «We prioritized giving Toronto a preferred destination early - and gave up some July 1 leverage - to do right by TML & let them get assets back».
Leverage:
An extra 24/48 hours of cap and roster certainty lets VGK move at full speed on 7/1 on other deals, prevents post-trade extortion on the cap-clearing moves already taken care of in this trade, and eliminates the risk of other Marner suitors maneuvering & emerging
Benchmarking:
Darren Ferris finalizing Mitch's deal before July 1 (as opposed to in 2+ weeks) sets a helpful benchmark for other agents & their clients seeking a big new deal (Ehlers) or extension (Kaprizov).
And it frees up other potential Mitch suitors to spend $ elsewhere
Whatever the case may be, if this trade gets done, it will be the biggest story in the entire National Hockey League.
If it doesn't get done, then we are in for a long July 1st, and the Marner situation could end up extending for days and weeks.
