Morgan Rielly has become the whipping boy for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season and quite frankly, there are some very valid reasons for this.
Quite frankly,
he has not been good enough. Whether it is his steep decline in production (34 points in 70 games) or his -20 net rating, there is no doubt he has been bad.
Morgan Rielly's struggles continue with the Toronto Maple Leafs
Drew Livingstone, a producer for the Steve Dangle Podcast Network recently provided some very interesting statistics that directly implicate Rielly and his potential future in Toronto.
As it stands, Rielly is the only player in the league to have spent his entire year with a playoff team and still have a net rating of -20 or worse.
The only other players on playoff teams with this kind of rating or those who were traded from bottom-feeders.
Only one player has spent his entire season on a playoff team and is -20 or worse:
TOR | Morgan Rielly -22
The other 3 players on playoff teams -20 or worse were traded from non-playoff teams:
PHI/TOR |
Scott Laughton -21
CHI/FLA |
Seth Jones -21
NSH/MIN |
Gustav Nyquist -21
This and a myriad of other factors suggest that Rielly could be a trade candidate come the summer, especially with the rise of players like
Chris Tanev and
Jake McCabe.
However, Rielly's contract is going to be a difficult one to move when you consider he makes $7.5 million per year to be so-so in the defensive end.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are in a real predicament here and they are hoping that they get playoff MO in about a month from now.
