Insider Confirms Nick Robertson's Future with the Toronto Maple Leafs

Nick Robertson is a player who has certainly had his fair share of ups and downs as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Last offseason, the forward found himself demanding a trade as he and the Leafs could not figure out a new deal that made sense. However, things eventually got squared away, and Robertson played the entire season.

Unfortunately, he was a frequent healthy scratch as he struggled under the Craig Berube system. In 69 games, he only had 15 goals and 22 points. In the postseason, he only played three out of 13 games.

Now, the Leafs must make a decision on Robertson as his deal expires on June 30th. From there, he has the right to enter arbitration. Some say his next deal could be worth between $1.5 and $2 million.

That salary is a tough pill to swallow, and given how much he was scratched, there is a sense that the Leafs simply do not want him on the team for much longer.

This was all but confirmed by James Mirtle of The Athletic, who wrote about how the Leafs are very likely to trade Robertson this offseason, once and for all.

The Robertson experiment is certainly one that failed in Toronto. Fans wanted him to be better, but he was a big part of why the bottom six was a bit of a failure last season.

15 goals are fine, but he is someone who should be producing more, especially given his demands for more ice time. The Leafs have run out of patience.

Only time will tell whether or not a trade comes prior to July 1st, or if they will engage in a sign-and-trade. If that is the case, the Leafs probably won't get much in return.

Either way, it seems like a divorce between these two is for the best at this moment.
